Your Top Spa FAQs — Answered by a Real Human

By Jake Howard, Licensed Master Esthetician  •  June 14, 2025

You’ve got questions. I’ve got answers—minus the gatekeeping, weird vibes, or “you’re doing everything wrong” energy.

This is your one-stop guide to feeling prepared, informed, and confident before booking a facial, wax, body treatment, or skincare service at Rocky Mountain Skin.

💆‍♀️ First-Time Client Questions

Q: What should I expect during my first facial?

A: A fully customized treatment built around your skin, goals, and comfort level. We’ll talk through your concerns, what you want from your skin long-term, and anything that helps you feel safe. Then I’ll tailor a deep cleanse, exfoliation, extractions (if needed), facial massage, and a mask. You can talk, zone out, or nap—this time is yours.

Q: Do I have to take off my clothes?

A: Not for most services. Facials can be done with your shirt on. For body treatments, you’ll be draped and covered professionally the entire time. Your comfort and consent come first.

Q: Will my skin react or look irritated afterward?

A: Not usually. You may see some mild pinkness after extractions or active ingredients, but you’ll leave hydrated and glowy—not inflamed.

Q: I’m nervous. Is that normal?

A: Absolutely. Many first-time clients feel nervous about their skin, their body, or the unknown. I walk you through everything and check in often so you always know what’s happening and why.

🧴 Acne + Skin Treatment Questions

Q: Do you treat teenage acne?

A: Yes—often. I specialize in safe, realistic, judgment-free acne care for teens and adults. I extract safely, explain routines in simple language, and recommend affordable products that actually help.

Q: Do I need a full routine already?

A: Nope. Come exactly as you are. I’ll help you build a skincare plan based on your budget and lifestyle—whether you’re using a full lineup or just a bar of soap.

Q: Will extractions make my acne worse?

A: When done properly, no. Professional extractions speed healing and help prevent clogged pores from turning into breakouts. I use gentle techniques and soothing post-care so your skin calms quickly.

Q: Do you offer professional treatments for acne?

A: Yes—acne-focused facials, exfoliation options, and treatment plans designed to rebuild your barrier and reduce inflammation without wrecking your skin.

🧘‍♂️ Body Treatment Questions

Q: What body treatments do you offer?

A: I offer full-body exfoliation services, hydrating treatments, back facials, and targeted skin treatments for areas like the chest, back, or buttocks. These are great for dry skin, ingrown hairs, congestion, and anyone needing deep relaxation.

Q: Do I have to fully undress?

A: Only to your comfort level. You’ll be professionally draped at all times, and I explain every step as I go. You’re always in control.

Q: Are body treatments for all genders and body types?

A: Yes. 100%. My studio is body-positive, queer-affirming, and inclusive. All bodies—and all comfort levels—are welcome.

Q: Can you treat body acne?

A: Absolutely. Back and chest acne respond really well to exfoliation, extractions, and targeted ingredients. I can help you build a home routine too.

🏳️‍🌈 Inclusive Care Questions

Q: Are your services queer- and trans-affirming?

A: Always. This is a queer-owned studio created for people who often feel excluded from spa culture. No assumptions, no binary scripts—just respect, safety, and real care.

Q: Is your space trauma-informed and body-positive?

A: Yes. Every touch is consent-based. You can keep clothing on, request no-touch zones, or ask for modifications at any time. I work with all comfort levels.

Q: Do you work with clients on HRT or navigating hormone-related skin changes?

A: Yes. Hormones impact skin more than most people realize. I work with clients across the gender spectrum and tailor routines for acne, dryness, sensitivity, texture, and post-laser or post-surgical skin.

💖 Brows, Waxing + PMU Questions

Q: What’s the difference between brow waxing and brow lamination?

A: Waxing shapes the brows. Lamination lifts and smooths the hairs for a fuller, fluffy look. You can do one or both depending on your style.

Q: What PMU services do you offer?

A: I offer natural-looking permanent brows and eyeliner. We’ll map out your shape, talk color, discuss healing, and make sure the result fits your face—not a trend.

Q: Does waxing hurt?

A: A little, but it’s quick. I use gentle techniques and soothing products to keep discomfort minimal.

Q: How do I prep for a wax?

A: Let the hair grow for 2 weeks, skip retinols/exfoliants for 48 hours, and come clean (not freshly scrubbed). I’ll handle the rest.

💳 Booking, Policies + Payments

Q: How do I book?

A: Head to my booking page, choose your service, and fill out the short intake form beforehand. Easy.

Q: What’s your cancellation policy?

A: I require 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancels and no-shows may be charged a fee.

Q: Do you take HSA/FSA?

A: Some clients use HSA/FSA for acne-related treatments—depends on your provider. I can give you an itemized receipt.

Q: Do you offer payment plans?

A: Not formally, but I’m always willing to help you prioritize your routine so you’re spending smart, not stressed.

🌟 Extra Questions People Ask All the Time

Q: Can I come in if my skin is “bad”?

A: Yes. Please do. You don’t need perfect skin to get help. I treat breakouts, irritation, sensitivity, and barriers that need rebuilding—without judgment.

Q: What if I’m on Accutane or other medications?

A: That’s totally fine. Just tell me in your intake form and we’ll adjust everything safely.

Q: Can pregnant clients get facials or treatments?

A: Yes—with modifications. I follow pregnancy-safe protocols and swap out ingredients as needed.

Q: Do you sell products?

A: Yes. I carry PCA, Image, and a curated mix of high-performing professional products. I also recommend drugstore options when they make more sense for your skin or budget.

Q: Should I stop using actives before coming in?

A: If you’re using retinol, strong exfoliants, or benzoyl peroxide, pause 48 hours before your facial or body treatment unless I tell you otherwise.
